Do You Need to Filter Your Municipal Water?
Some areas around the country need to filter the water that they get from the municipality. In these areas, it’s necessary to filter the water before use. If you want the water coming into your home filtered for some reason, pay attention to the steps that you’ll have to take to that end:
1. It’s important that you get a sediment filtering system first of all. Before being run through a carbon filtration system, all rust, sand, and other large particles will effectively be removed from the water. Since the carbon filter is much more expensive than a sediment filter, and these larger contaminants can clog the carbon filter, it is much more cost effective to run the water through the sediment filter first. The most common sediment filters for household use are either the 10” big blue system or the 20” big blue water system. The 20-inch model will filter water more rapidly as well as last longer.
2. A carbon filter is important for removing bad tastes and smells from the water. It is necessary to have one of the housings discussed in number 1 above in order to install a carbon filter. Your water filtration capacity will be much greater if you buy a 20-inch housing.

3. Before you can safely drink the water, you’ll need to get rid of harmful contaminants, something that an under-sink or reverse osmosis filtration system will be capable of. There are numerous types of these systems available depending on the amount you wish to pay.
