A climate which has extreme temperatures of hot or cold can cause the air to become very dry. If humidity drops below the 30%-40% band then health issues such as asthma, allergies or colds can begin to occur. This is because the air dries out the membranes of the mouth and nose. There are a range of different humidifiers manufactured by companies like Honeywell, Bemis and Holmes. The most common types of humidifiers include cold mist, hot mist and ultrasonic. Most of these models use tap water to operate.
Warm mist models push a stream of hot or warm moisture into the room’s air. Because of the heat involved in their operation any model you buy should automatically turn itself off when the water becomes too low. This will protect the unit and your home from overheating.
The other type of humidifier is the cool mist model. Instead of releasing warm moisture these units use stream of cold water. This means that they not only increase humidity but also cause the room’s temperature to fall. Ultrasonic models are cool mist units that use vibration to release the moisture.
Humidifiers come in a variety of sizes and you should know what size you need to regulate the humidity in the desired room. Single room models are available and are usually compact and small. Other sizes can be used on rooms from 700 square feet to 2,600 square feet.
A vital part of one of these machines is their filters. Certain models have filters installed that will last a lifetime. All that is required is that you clean the filter every once and awhile. In contrast, limited life filters will require you to buy new ones every three months or so.
The hardness of your local water supply is important. If you have hard water you will need to buy a model with a filter capable of dealing with this type of water. Some models also purify the air as they work and are a good option if you suffer from asthma, colds or allergies.
Humidifiers are available for purchase in home and garden stores, hardware or department stores. Another option is to purchase online. If you buy through the internet make sure that you only do so via a trustworthy site. Also, look at the price of delivery as this can sometimes add an extra cost which makes it more expensive than buying from a retail store.
